Over the past few years, the world has changed beyond recognition. International treaties on tariffs and trade that had long been respected are now being disregarded, and a new scheme of so called “reciprocal tariffs” is disrupting the global economy. State intervention in cross border M&A is no longer unusual, and policies toward migrants and foreign nationals have grown more restrictive, reversing the expansion of diversity & inclusion initiatives. At the same time, there are even cases in which lawyers and law firms that criticize these trends find themselves coming under attack.
The key term that underpins these new phenomena is “national security”.
In an era where national security is treated as the supreme value and the free trade regime has effectively come to an end, how should lawyers confront the wave of disruptions that continues to unfold?
This seminar will analyse the factors that have given rise to these new phenomena and will share the efforts of lawyers working to overcome the turmoil in areas such as trade, M&A, immigration policy, diversity & inclusion, and attacks on the legal profession, with a view to examining the emerging role of lawyers in this new era.
We look forward to seeing you in Tokyo!
